BLM Press Release: Kempthorne Approves $140 Million; NVFSC to receive $5 million for wildfire risk reduction projects

What does this mean for chapters of The Nevada Fire Safe Council? For the Lake Tahoe Basin: $4 million
- Implementation the Community Wildfire Protection Plans will continue in 2009. This includes: Shaded fuel breaks, designed to protect communities at risk in the Basin, will be created through the end of 2009.
- The ‘Defensible Space Rebate Program’ will continue in 2009, with the addition of residents of the City of South Lake Tahoe and county residents within the Fallen Leaf Fire Protection District. Additional funding will be made available for residents who voluntarily comply with recommendations made by local Fire Protection Districts and Fire Departments.
- Fire Protection Districts and Fire Departments in the Basin will be provided additional funding to keep ever-popular curb-side chipping programs available. However, local district chipping crews throughout the Basin are still experiencing a backlog of requests — your compliance with defensible space recommendations is much appreciated, as is your patience with your FPD chpping crew!
- The removal of hazardous materials from the basin to provide fuel for co-generation power plants will be encouraged by the funding.
For the Carson Range: $1 million
- Wildfire risk reduction projects Fire Safe Council community chapters will continue throughout 2009. The Nevada Fire Safe Council has 25 chapters within the jurisdiction of the SNPLMA grant.
- Wildfire risk reduction projects will continue on property managed by Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space. The fuel reduction projects identified are considered high priority by the County and are identified in the Washoe County Community Wildfire Protection Plan.
