The Estates at Mt. Rose (EMR) community is located in the Mt. Rose corridor of Washoe County east and west of Callahan Road at Mt. Rose highway (SR431). This new community started construction in 2003 with some 240 homes planned and about 150 constructed to date (Spring 2008) on 1+ acre lots.
Our Chapter was formed in early June 2007 and we immediately organized 21 private property owners to begin a fuel reduction project along the Eastern perimeter of the community. The Lake Tahoe basin fires during the summer of 2007 confirmed the wisdom of moving aggressively to deal with the wildland fire hazard in our community. With assistance from the NVFSC Staff, we received a matching grant from the Nevada Division of Forestry in September 2007 and completed our first fuel reduction project in late 2007.
We have proposed a followup project with our HOA for the common areas of our community for 2008, initially addressing some 30 acres of heavy vegetation on uphill slopes.
Our Chapter recently made a donation to the Wildland Fire Awareness Week activities.
Our Chapter’s fuel reduction project was featured on Reno’s KTVN Channel 2 in March 2008 as a part of NVFSC’s public relations effort to encourage similar community efforts.
