The Horseman’s Canyon Chapter is located on the northwest side of Horseman’s Canyon off Skyline Drive in Southwest Reno. The canyon area is steep urban/wildland interface overgrown through years of neglect with a level area at the canyon rim where 30 homes sit. The Steamboat Ditch and Trail are at the bottom of the canyon and impact the slope further with flourishing vegitation and heavy daily useage by people of all ages.
Horseman’s Canyon will be participating in a hazardous fuels reduction project in May of 2008. Funding for this project will come from the Round eight Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act. The chapter plans to reduce fuels in the HOA common areas, apply herbicide and reseeding/ planting of canyon slope. Specifically the chapter project will create defensible space, depending on the slope of the canyon, between 100 to 150 feet away from the homes on Salerno Drive in the Strata Fiorita Subdivision. All dead brush and combustible vegetation is to be removed within this prescribed area. Remaining shrubs are to be removed or trimmed and thinned to recommended height and width requirements. Cheat grass is to be treated with herbicide for future reduction leading to elimination and native grasses to be re-introduced.
