Kings Canyon became a member of the Nevada Fire Safe Council in June of 2005 after the Waterfall Fire destroyed 10 homes in the community. The Chapter located just west of Carson City, has been focusing on mitigating potential cheat grass invasion on recently burned lands and reducing unburned fuels along a preexisting fuel break.
A Grant from the State of Nevada was used to reduce the future fire threat to the community. A total of 20 acres were treated and 80 tons of biomass was removed.
Kings Canyon will begin applying herbicide to existing fuel breaks with a grant from the Southern Nevada Public Lands Act in the Spring of 2009.
